Fishing is split in to two seperate disciplines:


River Fishing - 川 釣り "Kawa tsuri"

Locations

! NB The locations aren't marked on the map, but when you get near them in-game then you should see a white ! marker near the waters edge near another angler.

How to Play

Bait

The playable character needs to have something to use as bait in their inventory, like: ! NB If you don't have any bait then the angler won't let you fish and the game will dump you out of the menu.

Start

Go to one of the fishing locations and interact with the icon.
  • 釣りをする - Do fishing
  • 釣り方を確認 - Instructions
  • やめる - Quit

Select bait

The gauge on the left signifies where the fish are and where your bait is effective. The light purple on the right represents where the schoals of fish are. The different bait will show up as light blue on the left of the gauge. Try and align the bait to where the fish are. You can catch fish in the none purple areas but it is much less likely and you will almost never catch one of the rarer or more expensive ones in this zone.

! If the purple bar is pretty much fills all the gauge then this is usually a sign that it is ripe for fishing. If the gauge empties significantly after a round then exit and re-enter the fishing game.

! If you catch something first time then exit and re-enter unless the gauge is pretty much full (it usually leaves a slither at the top or bottom of the gauge).

How To River Fish

You may find that when the bait is cast into the river that you are more successful catching fish if you move the left analog stick. I have been following the procedure of using a very slow circular motion starting at the left and moving round the following points: up, right and down then back round and round.

The float has a black marker. I find that when this black marker moves below the surface of the water then it is safe to press the catch button. This will be either X or ◯ depending on the regional settings on your PS3. I then button mash the same button until the fish is caught.

If you wait until the the screen says press ◯ then usually you are too late or have a strong catch. If it is a strong catch then keep mashing the X or ◯ button (again depending on your settings).

Special Circumstances

! It is possible that in Shinada's story section, he can only start fishing if he has 特製ミミズ Special Earthworm in his inventory. He won this in Ryuu Ga Gotoku 5 Part 4 Chapter 2 Bygone Challenges when first beating Shirakara in the batting cage.



Sea Fishing 海釣り "Umizuri"

Locations

  • 名古屋 埠頭 Nagoya Pier via the {{Ryuu Ga Gotoku 5 Taxis|taxi}} in Kineichou.
  • 埠頭 Pier (Tokyo Docks) via the {{Ryuu Ga Gotoku 5 Taxis|taxi}} in Kamurochou.

At the docks

Talk to the angler near the fishing rod:
  • エサを売ってもらう - Buy Bait
  • 魚を引き取ってもらう - Sell Fish
  • やめる - Quit

Go to the fishing rod:
  • 釣りをする - Do fishing
  • やめる - Quit
The next menu:
  • 釣りをする - Do fishing
  • 釣り方を確認 - Instructions
  • やめる - Quit
Select the bait.

Commands

  • R1 - Reel in
  • R1 + R2 リール - Reel in quick
  • L1 - Reel out
  • L1 + L2 - Reel out quick
  • X / ◯ - Depending on your PS3 settings this will be the button you need to yank the rod when the fish bites.
  • Left stick - Rod movement
  • DPAD - Movement choice / alternative movement

Tactics

Fishing in RGG5 is far less demanding than previous games and can be completed faster. For far and difficult to reel fish, you can use R1 and R2 until the red bar goes dark red then immediately press L1 until the gauge goes down to blue/green then hit R1 and R2 again. Repest this process until the catch is within 20m.

This process reduced the reeling in time for a Kajiki from 3 minutes to 1 minute.
